Next year, 2016, marks the 75th anniversary of the Malvern Conference, as convened by Archbishop William Temple in 1941 to consider the ‘ordering of a new society’ after the Second World War. To mark this special anniversary, William Temple Foundation has partnered with the University of Worcester to organise a conference and to edit a special edition of the Journal of Beliefs and Values. The conference and the journal will explore issues of social justice in our contemporary context of economic unrest, austerity and climate change.
We’re calling on friends and supporters of the Foundation to submit proposals for conference sessions and also for journal articles. Two separate calls for papers are detailed below.
Social Justice: building a fairer, more equal society
Thursday 23 June 2016 – Saturday 25 June, Worcester
We are inviting proposals which address questions of social justice in relation to, for example, faith, education, health, welfare, race, ethnicity, gender, class, public policy and economics. We welcome proposals which engage with the interconnections and synergies between these different areas, and which also challenge us on ways in which we can contribute to positive change.
**UPDATE** A discounted rate for unsponsored and third-sector delegates is now available from just £16.50 per day. Click on the ‘private delegate’ tab to book.
For full details and enquiries visit the dedicated conference page on the University of Worcester website.
Special issue of the Journal of Beliefs and Values: studies in religion and education, ‘Faith in the Public Square’.
Recognising the changed circumstances since the 1941 Malvern Conference, both culturally and socially, this special issue invites contributions under the theme ‘faith in the public sphere’ broadly understood. Particular contributions will be welcome which reframe the debate in relation to the role of religion in society in the areas of education, healthcare, finance, environmental concerns and policy-making, theologically, historically, theoretically, conceptually or empirically.
