The William Temple Foundation is delighted to announce two high-profile speakers for its annual lectures in 2019 and 2020.
Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, will be delivering the annual lecture in May 2019; with Professor Mariana Mazzucato, a leading economist and director of the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose at University College London, giving the lecture in 2020.
As two key voices in the public sphere at a time of great uncertainty, both nationally and internationally, Archbishop Justin and Professor Mazzucato will be offering complementary perspectives on the current state of civil society. Both speakers were also commissioners of the recent Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) report on economic justice, and are therefore superbly well-placed to comment on how religion, belief and economics will shape the future of post-Brexit Britain.
These lectures also come at an important time for the William Temple Foundation itself. Given Archbishop William Temple’s influential role in the establishment of the welfare state in the aftermath of World War Two, we believe that we have a real responsibility today to contribute to the debate on how to build a fairer society for all. This is why we have recently launched a new fundraising campaign: to ensure that we can continue to carry out this vital work.
Reacting to the announcement, Director of Research, Professor Chris Baker said:
‘We are on the cusp of a highly dangerous and unstable moment in the history of both this country and Europe, which will have global consequences. The task of rebuilding a post-Brexit social order that is progressive, fair and just begins right now—and these two global public figures, with so much knowledge and wisdom at their disposal, will be integral to forming and sustaining that new moral, political and economic imagination that we will need in the months and years ahead.’
Archbishop Justin’s lecture will be held on Monday 13th May 2019 at Lambeth Palace. Register here for a free ticket.
Professor Mazzucato’s lecture is scheduled for 7th May 2020.
